The First Muslim Designer at NYFW

First Muslim Designer at New York Fashion Week!

NYFW is one of the most important semi-annual fashion events of the year. The glamourous event is spread over 7-9 days, where fashion designers put on elaborate shows, showcasing their exquisite creations. Retail buyers, fashion editors and important fashion figures gather from all over the world to witness these designer’s collections’. With an endless amount of shows, each designer putting forward a different idea of what the spring summer women of 2017 should look like, we imagine it would be difficult to get noticed from the crowd. Anniesa Hasibuan, who happens to be the first Indonesian designer at NYFW, received a standing ovation from everyone lucky enough to witness her live show!

In amongst an endless parade of models, showing off a combination of arms, legs, chest and stomach for the next spring summer season, it was a much needed refreshment to see what Anniesa produced at Moynihan Station – one of NYFW’s official locations. Anniesa’s models walked out all dressed in the full head to toe hijab. Every single one of her 48 looks, featured a different colour of the traditional Muslim hijab. The 30-year old’s collection has made history as the first ever collection to feature this religious clothing item on every single model during a show.

The ground breaking collection included beautiful, printed trousers, silky flowing tunics and richly embellished gowns. Most pieces were made from traditional Indonesian jacquard fabrics as the entire collection was inspired by Anniesa’s home city of Jakarta. The looks were finished with a statement metallic waist sash and a pair of bold, bejeweled sunglasses and of course a beautifully matched head scarf.

Below are some images of Anniesa’s collection.
